Have I got this advertising on Mandy thing right?

I've procured funding to make a full length feature film which will shoot for five weeks in November and December. I'm seeking to create a small team of vendors who are ambitious and eager to have their equipment and facilities used to make a feature film.

Because my crew are on full salaries I don't have adequate funding for equipment, props, costumes, transport or catering. I'm looking to secure the following:

1 - Camera crew's equipment.

2 - Sound crew's equipment.

3 - Computers, phones, fax machines etc. for production office.

4 - Office for production office.

5 - Sound stage for two weeks.

6 - Post production facilities for six months.

7 - Props and costumes.

8 - Food. Hot, vegetarian and salads.

Payment for these will be deferred (albeit at a generous rate) but you will be my first port of call when I make a fully funded feature next year.

I am sorry, I ment that the script for the programme needs to be finnished before we can give an answer.

I am not sure that the characters would be able to say "oh my goodness you disolved sugar" as that would be too much like South park and we would possibly get in trouble with comedy central who most likly own the phrase "Oh my god they killed Kenny"

The programme where they banned water was that they went to an environmental protest and asked people to sign a partition baning water but giving it's chemical name, something that people who know about the environment should know.

When a programme is made the rights of the programme is bought by the production company from the person who comes up with the idea and the rights are then sold to TV channels.

If you can submit a script for an episode we can review the idea alot better

I disagree with you about not involving children in understanding current affairs. Perhaps you should imagine how Grape the Cat could be like an animated version of John Craven's Newsround? Remember that Mark?

Oh and I haven't seen the programme you mentioned. What's a partition to ban water? That sounds really really silly but then I've heard that Christmas is banned in Iran. Don't you think that could be a good episode of The Adventures of Grape the Cat Mark?

Unfortunatly we cant make a programme which has not been finished yet.
I think it would be a very bad idea to encourage children to take intrest in any kind of politics or current affairs as in most if not all times children dont quite understand the news and this would encourage children, like many protestors to protest about something they know almost nothing about. You may have seen a programme a while ago where a tv programme went to a protest about the environment and a few hundred protestors singed a partition to ban water.

What's a partition to ban water? Is that like a dam? Were all these children scribbling graffiti on it? Mark is sure confusing me!!

Today I submitted an idea to TV 7, a brand new TV company. Very exciting!! I've even pitched an idea already. Here's my pitch:

Hi Mark,

I have a great idea for a cartoon for kids that I think you'll be interested in. It's called "The Adventures of Grape the Cat" and is about a cat called Grape (he's purple) and his friends Spot the Dog (because his frames are always covered in squiggles so you have to 'spot' him, get it?) and Sugar the Mouse. The cartoon is about their adventures promoting good food for kids (it started out as a pitch I made for an educational programme) and battling their nemesis - the evil witch Cod Liver Oil who is a large bottle of cod liver oil (which ALL kids hate) and who flies around on a large spoon rather than a broomstick. I'm attaching pictures of the characters.

The main theme of the series is that our three heroes try to persuade kids to eat and drink healthily. Even though one of the characters is called Sugar that's because a little sugar isn't bad and Sugar the Mouse is quite small. Unfortunately for Sugar she tends to dissolve anytime there's rain or when Cod Liver Oil covers her in oil so she ends up as a puddle sometimes. It's a bit like "South Park" and Kenny as in almost every episode Grape or Spot says "Oh my goodness, you dissolved Sugar!!" but Sugar always comes back again.

So, what do you think Mark? I think this one's a goer for sure. Where do we go from here? How soon can I get an office in the programme department? (I'd like a south facing one so I get lots of sunshine.) I'll give you a cut of the merchandising as well as a production fee.

I'm a student/graduate myself (I'm still waiting for my results so I'm not sure if I can call myself a graduate just yet if you know what I mean because if the tutors find out that I cogged my thesis from an internet site I might not graduate until next year) and as a Jill of all trades and mistress of some have a lot of camera/sound/editing experience using DSRs/Z1s, Dagras/DATs, Avid/Final Cut and other equipment.

I live in the Leeds/Bradford area and have my own transport for at least the next few months (as I'm borrowing my boyfriend's car because his leg is still in plaster after that accident with the bull in Pamplona) at which time I'll hopefully become permenant and be able to buy my own. I'm probably a good candidate for you because in addition to my Media Studies Diploma I also have a diploma in Marketing. My boyfriend (he's a copyrighter whose dream is to write a tag line as memorable as "go to work on an egg") works in marketing too and we're always talking about the things we're working on so you'd have no shortage of ideas. The last thing I helped him with was a project to encourage kids to eat healthily and eat some fruit every day so I suggested that he create a character called Grape the Cat (he's purple) to appear in supermarkets and at schools to encourage kids to eat fruit every day. So what's your upcoming film about? I've already done some research on your film company and noticed that Eva has made a lot of films about lesbianism. Is this what your next one is about? This could be a very tough sell but if "Go Fish" and "High Art" could get an audience then all we have to do is come up with a campaign for you. Beauty and the Geek is pretty stupid but then it is an American idea LOL! How is that a 'social experiment'? (At least when the Dutch thought of Big Brother they could say it was based on a Nobel winning (or some other prize (I don't know which one it won (or even if it did win one))) novel.) I can just imagine Ashton Ketchup thinking of it and saying to his frat boy doozies at his company

Ketchup: "Hey dudes, wouldn't it be like really interesting to get some chicks like those babes we saw in that club on Sunset last night and then stick them in house with some really dorky doofuses?"

Ass-Kisser: "Yeah man, it'd be like so worth a bet on whether the nerds could learn chat up lines and the chicks could learn NASA math and stuff."

I really had to write to you again to ask you about the money thing. I always think it's good to follow up job applications, even unsuccessful ones, so that I can learn more about climbing greasy poles. (I'm not talking about my neighbours in Hammersmith either so don't call me a xylophobe either LOL!) Was this job part-time or a work experience placement for students? My boyfriend (he's a legal clerk) told me that unless you were taking on a student who had to do work experience for their course you'd be breaking the law and should be reported to the Inland Revenue for breaking the law about minimum wages. I'd really like an answer about this so that I'll know these things for future job applications. I'm very cross that I cancelled a hair appointment a few days ago for an interview that never happened.

Anyways, good luck with your ventures but one word of warning. If you steal any of my ideas and I find out by seeing Grape the Cat giving people samples of prune juice down the supermarket I'll have to behave like a gangsta rappa and "get all legal on yo ass" which will be very easy for me to do because I've copyrighted him and my boyfriend (he's a legal clerk) knows lots about the law.

Hi Sara,

I do hope that hasn't been filled because I'd really like to get involved with a political project. My boyfriend (he's a member of Respect) says it's good because it helps you feel like a swozunt retard (or something like that, I don't quite understand) and because I'm returning to college I am eligible to do the job.

What will the style of these private diaries be? Is it going to be a video diary room like on Big Brother? I won't have to film anything naughty will I? I've heard that some politicians can be right dirty sleazebags and I don't want to have to follow them round to Hampstead Heath in the middle of the night, especially if the infra red on the camera isn't that great. If I was looking through the viewfinder I might not see where I'm going and bump into a tree.

It's a shame that you we weren't able to do an interview today. I was quite excited about working for an upstart company with great beliefs. Didn't somebody once say "give a man a lunch and he won't be hungry until dinnertime, set his belly ablaze with passion and he'll want for nothing ... until suppertime"?

I've been asking for advice about this opening and some of the people I've spoken to think I shouldn't take it. My boyfriend (he's a legal clerk) told me that if the job is a proper job then I should really be paid at least the minimum wage for it. He told me that if I don't bring home some bacon too we might have to move somewhere cheaper like Cricklewood or Bethnal Green. Yuck! He also said that it's bad to take people on for nothing and that employers can get into trouble for it. He asked me if I really wanted to know what it must have been like for yooung girls who were forced to work in front of looms for nasty Victorian mill owners. No thank you!

So could you let me know if you will be paying a wage for this job? Then we can arrange another interview time. I had to cancel a hair appointment this morning but I'm free at the same time tomorrow.

P.S. I worked out the percentage shareholding if there are six other people there not including myself who work five day weeks but I only do two days per week but everything is split evenly depending on who works the most etc. It'd be 5.405405405406%. Phew! I think a wage would be easier to work out!

You don't mind me calling you Bernie do you? You can call me Suze, everybody else does.

So when should I come in for an interview? How about tomorrow morning around about 11:30am? Does that suit you? Whereabouts in Soho are you? Which is the closest tube station? I don't want to get lost.

I've been typing up some more of my ideas for things. I have a few more programme proposals and also some ideas for ads. I've had this image in my head of a character called Grape the Cat (who's purple, hence the name) who can go round to supermarkets. Perhaps we could sell the idea to Ribena although maybe they're not the best bet because it's made from blackcurrants. Some people think it's a little silly but I did see an article in the newspaper about a dog that moos instead of barking so I don't think it's that silly really. Besides, Barney is a purple dinosaur so why not a purple cat?

Oh and I was just talking to my boyfriend about the contract stuff (he's a legal clerk) and I was wrong because it isn't equity in the company (so it is actors!) I should be asking for but a shareholding. How many people are in the company because if it's something like seven then that's an awkward percentage and I guess I woulnd't be on the same because I'd be part-time so it'd be the even split then divided down to be two fifths of a normal hare or somethign like that. Anyway, I'll leave the sums to other people like my boyfriend (he's also quite good at maths) and concentrate on the creative stuff myself.

Dear Bernardo,

I thought I should send a follow up email to the one I sent yesterday because when I reread it I thought it didn't read very well. I thought I should tell you that drug dealer from Liverpool was the subject of the tape that I was transcribing and that I don't actually know any drug dealers from Liverpool or any drug dealers from anywhere else either.

I hope you've had time to think about my ideas for how I can be part of the gang too and help your company grow. What should we do next? Is it time for a meeting? I'm not doing much for the rest of the week so I can come in to meet you at your convenience although I can't do any days after 3:30pm as I have to get to the restaurant (it's in Covent Garden, only two minutes from the tube but because I live in Hammersmith it still takes a long time to get in) for my waitressing job in the evening. I have lots of ideas I'd like to talk about and it would also give us a chance to sort out things like the equity (my boyfriend, he's a legal clerk, has given me lots of forms and things to sign and countersign in triplicate) which I'm quite excited about too because it will make the job more interesting than the kind of minimum wage temping things I've done before. Of course if you've decided that the equity idea isn't for you then we can just settle on a wage instead because much as I'd like to do the job it's very difficult for me to get by on a wage of zero!

I thought I'd give you a taster of what I want to make and I'd be very interested to make a programme about the WAGs and what happens to them when the players retire. I'd also like to produce a quiz show in which the star prize is a car but the booby prize is a dustbin. I think that'd be very cool.

Thanks for your swift reply and apologies for taking a while to reply myself. I've been transcribing interviews all morning and I didn't want to get caught sneaking onto email when I was supposed to be working. Very difficult too as the man was a drug dealer from Liverpool and if you can imagine what Mrs. Wayne Rooney's chauffeur sounds like when he's waiting for her outside Cricket during one of her shopping sprees you know how hard it is to understand them.

Sorry, I'm babbling but I'm very excited by this opportunity as it sounds like you're breaking new ground and it'd be cool to be one of the first people in a fresh and innovative company. It is a pity that you can't pay much but I spoke to my boyfriend (he's a legal clerk) and he said that if it's a new company it might be worth asking for equity (which I thought was for actors) in the company instead of payment. He said that somebody called Cringey was offfered this in Apple years ago but took the money instead and so missed out on becoming a squillionaire. Something like that would be good, especially as I think I can bring a lot to the company (I have lots of ideas) that would make for better telly than a lot of the boring stuff that's on now (Love Island? Snore Island more like LOL!) and it would be great to be able to make them in a young and imaginative company.

I'm sorry, I'd love to write some more and send you an updated CV (I've been reading lots of CV tips on productionbase that I want to pinch so that I can have a killer CV myself) but I have to get baack to work.

Hello,

I am very interested in your advertisement but I'm a bit worried that it's an unpaid position. I left college a year ago with a big student debt and London is a very expensive city to live in. Some people I've worked with have told me that I shouldn't take on jobs like this (even if they are a good way to make loads of contacts) because I should be paid the minimum wage for it and that it's against the law to do this.

Is this true because I would be very interested in the job but not if it means I won't get much money and also wouldn't be able to do other jobs at the same time. (Well, apart from my waiting tables job LOL!) Could you let me know a little more about it please?

Our courses to not give you a formal qualification, we are unique in that there are not teachers or lectures on our short movie making courses, the idea is to give you the opportunity to put your film school training into practical use by supplying the equipment and resources necessary to be able to make a short movie. We put together a production team, supply everything necessary to make the movie and then leave you to it. We do have a mentor on hand to help with anything the team gets stuck on so you are not completely on your own. You leave the course with a DVD copy of the movie which you co-own between the production team, it will be submitted into festivals and you will network with Britain's film makers of the future, you can use the movie to add to your show reel and it will show the production offices that you are capable of contributing to the making of a short movie. If you come on as an assistant you do not need to have any formal training but you will gain a wealth of practical experience and learn from the team as a whole.
